Mastering Multiplayer Gaming

Most people who play multiplayer games online don't notice the subtle hints and tricks that can easily turn you into a master gamer. Much like a grand master at chess there are certain ways of analyzing the playing field that will allow you to dominate all challengers. Since there is such a huge amount of online multiplayer games telling you how to play a single game won't help you much. So, I'm going to attempt to show you how you can analyze genres in general and include a few game examples as well.

Let's start with FPS games using Team Fortress 2 as an example. First let's talk about maps and how you can use what the designer intended to help you play better. Good map designers understand the needs of the players and create their maps around this. For example, in TF2 every quality map will have a "health track" you can run to constantly pick up health packs. Most players will remember where a health pack is. To take it a step farther though think about where 2-3 health packs are and how you can quickly travel between them. Simply run "laps" to each of these health packs fighting along the way and you will gain an immediate advantage. Not only will you always be at full health when engaging an enemy but if you're losing you should be close to picking up another health pack which will give you a much needed boost. Map design always has spots and paths that are specifically designed to be used by players to gain an advantage. Find these spots and use them whenever you can.

Now I'll give you an example in MMORPGs using WoW as an example. If you're still clicking your abilities then you are at a huge disadvantage to other players. You NEED to learn how to use WASD movement keys and the 1-0 keys for abilities. No more using the mouse except for turning which you should always be using anyway. Having your movement keys next to the spell hotkeys will give you the advantage of being able to move while using abilities without stopping to click or move your hand across the keyboard. Also, using the hotkeys instead of the mouse means you can spam over and over while moving so that your abilities will be used the instant they become available.

Simple analysis of your play style and the game environment will give you a critical edge in online multiplayer games. Use these examples and see what else you can notice in your favorite game that will give you a small edge. Even though it's a small edge it will have big results.
