Call of Duty: Black Ops Review - Any Good?

Treyarch's latest kick to the top of the hill for the best First Person Shooter Game in their ever so amazing Call of Duty Franchise is here, Cal of Duty: Black Ops is the most recent installment in the franchise and is the eighth release since the first Call of Duty back in 2003. Now, it's not a secret how the Call of Duty Franchise fairs in the video game industry. It has been the leading online-multiplayer FPS Video Game for quite a few years now, every release is anticipated and improvements and advances are being made at each and every release of Call of Duty which started it roots at a World War II setting and has now grew into a huge franchise, which now set in modern, more technological warfare.

However, Call of Duty: Black Ops released after one of the best FPS game ever made thus far, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Had its work cut out, and most players feel that this game was more of a rendition to Modern Warfare 2 rather than to be a full blown sequel. You can't really argue much with that case because, with what Modern Warfare 2 had that pleased every gamer who has ever played the game. It would be extremely hard to spin out of the setting and the features of the previous installment. Although, there are still significant changes with Black Ops, and is very much enough for it to be merited a league of its own. The game involves numerous tweaks and small improvements rather than any kind of reinvention of the franchise.

For example, multiplayer mode now awards players currency ("CoD Points") that they can use to purchase perks, weapons, and other accessories. A new Combat Training mode has been added to help beginners, and there's also more player customization than ever before, and a new emphasis on sharing video highlights of your games with your friends in Theater Mode.

The Single Player Campaign Story line is significantly interesting too; Gamers will play Alex Mason, a captured Black Ops soldier being interrogated about some unknown "Numbers Station". The mysterious journey holds your attention up to the action-packed finale. The initial question of "What do the numbers mean?" plays a provocative role in the underlying theme of the plot and gives you more than enough incentive to keep holding the controller. The Online Multiplayer Modes should most probably be the best bid that Black Ops has against other releases. Black Ops fixes deplored balancing issues, brings a revolutionary currency system, and adds new game modes. Instead of rewarding cheap tactics, Black Ops tests real skill.

Choosing your weapon and perk layout, adjusting to the map, and adapting to the current game mode are imperative to success. In Black Ops, there is no super-class that trumps all battlefield situations. This outstanding level of balance is the first of its kind. And it certainly is one of the factors that made this game the competitive game that online gamers adore and love. Surely, patronage to Call of Duty: Black Ops will continue through even after the next installment will be released.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - Deciphered

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a fantastic action adventure game that is perfectly designed to create the huge fan following it has accumulated. With amazing attention to detail and exciting scenarios to choose from, gamers can find themselves in the jungles of Viet Cong or in a prison camp in Russia without even standing up. Game-play is fantastic as Treyarch has ensured that the level of realism throughout the game is amped up as much as possible. Gamers are treated to humanized enemies with realistic expressions and dialog thanks to the use of a full performance capture where an actual actors is used to capture motion, facial expressions as well as vocalizations.

In addition the usual capture the flag and death match challenges that have been seen before, Call of Duty: Black Ops includes a new mode that is aptly names 'Wager'. Gamers have the freedom to bet away their virtual affluence on the hypothetical winner of themed challenges. Interesting and entertaining variants are the 'Sharp Shooter' and 'Gun Game' modes which encourage gamers to use as many weapons as they possible can in a single bout. 'Sharp Shooter' each player receives a different weapon which changes every 45 seconds. 'Gun Game' awards the player a better weapon after each massacre and ends when the player wins with all 20 weapons. Both modes are a test of sorts on the handling skills of the gamer, as they constantly change the accuracy of the different weapons.

Call of Duty: Black Ops also features 'One in the Chamber' where gamers are armed with just a single bullet for each kill and has just three lives in which they must emerge victorious. There is a whole lot of guarded creeping about politely interspersed with sudden and savage bouts of action to keep the blood pumping. Another favourite is 'Stick and Stones' where all advanced weaponry is strictly off limits. Gamers have to keep their wits about them and have the use of tomahawks, ballistic knives and crossbow to help them along. These are also based on technique and more importantly accuracy and skill and highlight exactly how much one can achieve from each weapon.

In most gaming circles, the shared sentiment remains that the crossbow that can be used in Call of Duty: Black Ops is the ultimate inspired piece of armoury since the introduction of the sniper rifle. One hit with an explosive bolt, the enemy explodes in an impressive and satisfying ball of fire in 5 seconds as the victim has the pleasure of waiting for his messy demise. Though, one must be warned that a victim of an explosive bolt can easily run at you at take you out with him when he explodes. In addition to the crossbow, gamers can reap the rewards of the tomahawk which gamers to hit enemies behind cover by aiming at a ceiling. With realistic features and inspiring game-play, Black Ops is undoubtedly one of the best FPS games created to date.

Many people have modded their black ops to improve graphics (rainbow-camouflaged weapons) as well as game-play. Heard of Black Ops mods? You should try using them too if you want all these cool features Treyarch left out! More information about Black Ops can be found here.
