Review: The Asus G50VT-X5 Republic of gamers Notebook PC has the look, feel, and tools of a good quality gaming notebook. Love it or hate it, the design and colors definitely get your attention. The Asus G50VT-X5 features a glossy black-and-brown base color, with a yellow/red lightning accent on the lid with LED lights up the sides side and across the middle.
Opening up the notebook, we were impressed by the wide, extended keyboard as well as the responsiveness and tactile response of the keys. The display is an 15.6" LCD Widescreen display with offers a 1,366x768 resolution. There is also a secondary OLD screen which can be used for instant messaging or checking system performance. The notebook also features a series of touch controls which allow the user to switch performance settings based on use, as well a few other quick set features. Another notable feature on the Asus G50VT-x5 is the Asus Express control. This allows user to access various files (IM, music, etc) without waiting for windows to boot.
The Asus G50VT-X5 is powered by the Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13 Ghz CPU Processor and 4 GB DRR2 RAM. Graphics card is NVIDIA 9800M GS Graphics w/ 512MB GDDR3 Memory. Storage is one 320GB SATA Hard Drive Running @ 7200RPM. It should be noted that there is a second open drive bay for an additional hard drive to be installed. However, one would need to purchase a second drive caddy to do this, as there isn't one provided in the second port.
The G50VT-X5 has 4 USB ports, an E Sata Port, an antenna port, and 1394 Firewire port. As far as video connections, this Notebook has both a VGA port and HDMI port, but lacks an S-video port. There are two headhone jacks, one microphone jack, and one ExpressCard/54 port. The optical Drive is a DVD+/- Super Multidrive DVD reader/writer w/ Lightscribe Technology. While the Asus G50VT-X5 has both an Ethernet Port and Wi-Fi adapter, it does lack Bluetooth. An integrated 2.0 Mp Web Cam comes standard on this machine, and sound is handled by HD Altec Lansing speakers with Dolby Home Theater Sound.
We tested the ASUS G50VT-X5 using Unreal Tournament and Lost planet. Unreal Tournament Ran at 83 FPS using Extreme mode, while Lost Planet Ran @ 52 FPS in DX9 Extreme. Thus, we were happy to see that this notebook can handle demanding games with graphics options up still run at very high speeds. As far as battery life, we got just under 3 hours using the 9 cell battery.
Conclusion: The ASUS G50VT-X5 is a very capable gaming Notebook with above average graphics and overall quality. While it does lack some features like Bluetooth, S-Video, and a few media keys often found on other gaming PCs, one would be hard pressed to find a more capable Gaming Notebook in its price range. Thus, we have found the ASUS G50VT-X5 to be more than enough for most regular to heavy gamers, and a great value in the $560-$800 price range.
