An RTS, FPS, or MMO Mouse? Different Mice For Different Genres

There used to just be one kind of mouse, and it was the kind you moved and clicked. As computer games became more and more competitive, we began to see "gaming mice" - mice designed to give the user an advantage over their opponents. Now, we see mice that are made for specific types of games, or even specific games.

First, it should be understood what makes a gaming mouse different from a non-gaming mouse. Gaming mice are more accurate, and can be used to perform precise action in games. They are designed to have less delay, so the time between your click and the action being completed is lessened.

When gaming mice were first introduced, there were only a few models. Obviously these models were not right for everyone. It would be silly to think that everyone has the same idea of comfort when it comes to something like gaming accessories. On top of that, everyone holds the mouse a little bit differently.

To solve the problem, gaming mouse makers like Razer, Logitech, and Steelseries created mice that were designed for specific scenarios. The Razer Naga, for example, is designed for use in MMO games like World of Warcraft. The Razer Spectre is meant for RTS games like Starcraft 2. There are other gaming mice that work best in FPS games, like the Logitech G9x.

MMO mice usually have several buttons on the side so that they can be bound to the broad array of actions and macros that one must use in MMO games. These mice are also made to be comfortable for extended playing sessions, and try to offer the best in ergonomics. We have seen a number of MMO gaming mice introduced into the market, but Razer has made the best ones thus far.

RTS mice are a new creation, and are mostly designed to help the user be aware of what is happening in the game. They may, for example, flash bright red when a player's base is being attacked. In addition, they are designed to allow users to click several times a second without missing a beat. Not all gaming mice can respond quickly enough to meet the 400 APM that serious RTS gamers dish out.

FPS mice are usually those which allow for quick and efficient features like on-the-fly DPI switching. It is also useful to have a weight cartridge in the bottom for those who like heavier mice. These mice do not need a lot of buttons, as most shooters work with just one or two buttons. These mice are usually corded, and place a special emphasis on quick response time.

There are, of course, general gaming mice that are good for almost all purposes. A good example of this is the Logitech G500. For those who do not wish to buy a different mouse for each occasion, or do not play one type of game more than the other, general gaming mice are a good and more cost-effective solution.

If you are looking to buy a gaming mouse, it is always wise to review a gaming mouse purchase online before buying the product. If, for example, you were looking to buy and RTS mouse, you should find a Razer Spectre review to read first. You may find that even if a given item feels good and looks good, it has poor durability ratings.
