In the past, RPG games were nothing more than a PC gamer's kind of thing. Back in the 1990s, many Amiga and PC gamers loved playing the genre. Arguably, one of the best RPG games to come out at the time was a game called Eye of the Beholder. It may not be the most famous role playing game of all time but it has gotten a cult following over the years.
As popular as the game was, casual gamers were not warmed into the genre yet. It was considered to be "too nerdy" for the cool kids who were playing the likes of Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat.
It wasn't until the release of Final Fantasy VII in 1997 that the RPG genre was introduced in a huge way and was considered to be "cool" to a wider audience.
RPGs thrived from then on but have taken a back seat to recently to the FPS genre. Thanks to the popularity of the Call of Duty franchise, the FPS has become the most widely known and popular gaming genre in 2011. That's not to say there that the RPG genre is dead in 2011 as a number of games have been and will be released this year.
One of the genre's biggest releases this year has been the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2. Xbox 360 and PC gamers were lucky as the Mass Effect franchise was only exclusive to their respective platforms. That was until in January 2011 that the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 hit the PS3 in a big way. PS3 owners were delighted to know they had the superior version of the game since it came a few more extras and better graphics. Mass Effect and RPG fans can look forward to the release ofMass Effect 3 later this year.
The other major game released thus far in 2011 was Dragon Age II. Much like Mass Effect, the Dragon Age franchise is also created and developed by BioWare. PC gamers may have the best RPG games in 2011 as the long awaited Diablo 3 hits later this year. The much loved Torchlight made its debut on the Xbox 360 earlier this year too. It was previously a PC exclusive but now Xbox 360 owners can enjoy this action-rpg by downloading it via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
Japanese RPG fans should look forward to the release of Final Fantasy XIII-2. This is a direct sequel to the 2010's Final Fantasy XIII. Fans who were disappointed with Final Fantasy XIII will be happy to know that Square Enix is looking to improve the gameplay with this sequel. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is expected to be released late 2011.
The great thing about 2011 is how much technology has grown over the years. A of RPG games can now be enjoyed for free as internet browser games. One of my favorites released recently are the Super Stick RPG games. They play similarly to many role playing games like Final Fantasy and come complete with cutscenes and a battle system as well.
These are just a small fraction of games that you can enjoy in 2011. There are lots of RPG games that are available for you to play this year. If you're bored of generic and linear FPS games, give the RPG genre a try. Most good RPG's provide you with over 40 hours or more of gaming fun an offer aren't as linear as most FPS games. Do yourself a favor a play at least one RPG game released in 2011. You won't regret it.
If you're want to play old-school style of fantasy RPG games then this is the game for you. It may not be as flashy as Final Fantasy but the games still offer hours of fun.
