Quake Live Introduction

Quake Live is a relatively new browser-based video game. A browser-based game is pretty self-explanatory: it is a game that runs from your internet browser. It is a remake of the very popular game Quake 3 Arena, which came out in 1999 and was praised by video game critics and players alike. The game has been featured in competitive scenes for many years, and has been used in tournaments and leagues. Quake is such a popular gaming series, in fact, that a LAN party called QuakeCon is held in Dallas yearly that attracts thousands of gamers from around the world.

The game is not your typical FPS (First Person Shooter): it is extremely fast paced, and very skill based. It takes a lot of practice to become proficient at the game because the learning curve for the game is ridiculously steep. Newcomers to the game may be very discouraged when they join a game that is far above their skill level and get pummeled by higher-level players. They can avoid this by not joining a game that is orange or red, which is typically full of professionals that have been playing for years. It is recommended to do offline practice against computer players before trying your skills on multiplayer as you can begin learning the layouts of the maps, the pros and cons of the different weapons, and which weapon is better to use at which range, situation, etc. This is not a light, easy, or casual game, and you will become frustrated if you don't practice and learn the game before trying your hand at multiplayer matches.

A few general tips to start playing the game will be given, but going in depth would require a book's worth of content in order to teach you all the tricks and tips and movements. Some essential moves you need to learn in order to move faster in the arena include strafe jumping and circle jumping. Strafe jumping is essentially where you hold down your move forward key and one of the strafe keys, jump, and then alternate the strafe key while still holding the forward key and jumping right when you land. If you want even more speed, then you move your mouse in the direction of the strafe. It's not too complicated, and if you practice it enough, within a matter of days, or a couple short weeks, you'll have nearly mastered it. There are very useful videos on Youtube to learn this, and many other techniques, I recommend viewing them.

Now that you know a bit bout the game, stop reading, and start playing! See you in the Arena.
