First off, no 3D and no Move were used in this review. Space marine games come and go. When people think of a space marine videogame, it's often ridiculed for being a shallow pedantic experience. I am here to tell you boys and girls Killzone 3 is a space marine game done right! Killzone 3 is a visceral sci-fi first person shooter exclusively for the Playstation 3 developed by Guerilla Games and published by SCEA.
The story takes place after Vasari was killed in Killzone 2. Sev and Rico (the protagonists) are basically trying to evacuate from the planet Helghan. Little to their dismay the Helghan army releases a secret weapon that puts the ISA fleet in jeopardy. The ships are leaving the soldiers on the surface to basically fend for themselves until they can come back.
The story of Killzone 3 is about survival, rescuing comrades, facing new threats and ultimately saving Earth! The story wasn't as bad as many reviewers made it out to be. Is the story great, no, not at all. The story is adequate for Killzone 3. Good plot twists were well conceived through great cutscenes and level design. Amazing action set pieces also helped the story. Killzone 3's story is right in the same league as Modern Warfare 2 or Halo Reach but not as good as say Half Life 2.
he best visuals are the best on consoles at the moment. You do see blurry textures every now and then when in cover. Killzone 3 raised the bar as far as visuals are concerned. The textures are improved from Killzone 2. Guerrilla Games cut out the motion blur and used a new anti aliasing technique called MLAA. Many gamers complained about "no color" in Killzone 2. Well guess what? Yea, Killzone 3 has a lot of color. The jungle level was really beautiful in particular with vibrant colors. The overall level diversity and design was a big improvement over Killzone 2.
Lets keep in mind gamers Killzone 2 is a great looking game even today. I was pretty surprised to see a real upgrade when I played that first level in the Helghan capital. The overall game looked sharper, better textures and added color were present. Congrats GG, you gave all consoles a new benchmark for graphics.
Sound design was great in Killzone 3. The orchestra music contributed along with the great sound effects to immerse the player like no other. The sound design on all of the airships, guns were done with detail and care.
Killzone 3 is a cover based visceral first person shooter at heart. Killing Helghast was more satisfying than Killzone 2. The guns felt amazingly good when shooting. Each gun had a different feel and kickback. The cover system worked just liked Killzone 2. The brutal melees were sick. The gameplay flowed great with the level design from beginning to the end. The rail sequences were all action packed and really fun. The diversity in gameplay was a big step up compared to Killzone 2.
The aiming is fast twitch, like Call of Duty which made killing Helghast much easier. The heal feature came in handy when I took to many shots. Guerilla Games did a hell of a job on the single player of Killzone 3. I can't find many space marine games that had a better single player campaign as Killzone 3. It was like a huge adrenalin thrill ride culminating with huge set piece after set piece of action.
When your able to log in and play the game, its awesome fun! Killzone 3 is a blast to play online. The community is hot right now despite the problems. Everyone are forming clans and almost everyone have mics. The maps and game modes were all really fun. The new unlock system can give you an edge if you upgrade a certain way. The inclusion of mechs is fun. The mechs are not super powered and adds balance to Warzone matches. When GG patches this game's online netcode it will be a primo multiplayer fps!
Final verdict - Killzone 3 is a space marine game done right. The single player campaign will leave you awestruck. Although many things in Killzone 3's campaign been done before, they have not been done with such great visuals and sound design on consoles. The multiplayer portion has many issues when logging in and disconnects. When your playing, the multiplayer is excellent! Make sure you pick this game up if you own a PlayStation 3.
